Sherborne scoop ‘Best Conservatory or Orangery Installation over £35,000’ at GGP Installer awards
A project to replace a dilapidated lean-to at the side of a thatched cottage has scooped Sherborne a top prize at a recent awards ceremony.
The Glass and Glazing Products (GGP) magazine Awards in Manchester paid tribute to the work of Sherborne’s team by honouring them with the ‘Best Conservatory or Installation over £35,000’ award 2023.
Sherborne was approached to help with the lean-to and, after consultation, it was decided the best option would be remove it and replace it with a new orangery. The homeowners wanted this part of the house enhancing, to provide a year-round living space.
The problem was that the cottage is in a conservation area, which meant the products used were critical and had to blend in well with the look and feel of the existing property. In addition, planning permission had to be factored in.
Sherborne managed the demolition of the existing structure then rebuilt the walls at low level with bricks and mortar to honour the existing property.
For the elevations, Sherborne recommended using their Meranti Hardwood Flush window and door system for a more traditional look. The owners chose Oxford Clay for the finish, with Peardrop window handles along with matching peg stays.
For the flat roof the award winning IX250 flat roofing system was specified with bespoke Sherborne GutterCrest aluminium gutter/Orangery detail colour matched in Oxford Clay to match the elevation frames.
The roof covering was completed using Cosmofin single ply water proofing colour matched to a traditional lead finish to keep the flat roof looking original but with a modern long lasting protected roof.
The roof lantern was another bespoke solution using ‘Just Lanterns’ Timber lantern with aluminium cappings coloured to match the flat roof covering to keep everything looking traditional.
The combination of all these products resulted in the stunning orangery that looked exactly as the clients had hoped for.
Around 200 people gathered at Manchester’s Midland Hotel to celebrate glazing industry success. Sherborne was presented with its award by Nina Wadia OBE, the British actress and comedian best known for her work on EastEnders, Citizen Khan and Goodness Gracious Me.
Sherborne owner and MD Chris Long said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have won this award for the work we did on the cottage. Working on period properties in conservation areas is something that Sherborne are becoming renowned for, and this project was a particular challenge due to the sensitivities surrounding the conservation area this property sits in.
“The winning project was completed ahead of schedule and the clients were delighted with the end the result. In fact they were so pleased that they have just placed a new order for a brand-new timber front door!”
Charissa King, GGP’s editor, said: “It was a truly joyous and fittingly celebratory day. Huge congratulations to all of our sensational 16 award winners. And thanks so much to all who attended and supported the presentation ceremony in Manchester, including representatives of our sponsor businesses, without which we could not host as fabulous an event as we did.”
