Assure Certification vs FENSA: what are the differences?
If you plan to replace windows at home, you may know that the new windows need to be certified once completed to show that they comply with the UK Building Regulations. It has been a requirement since 2002 that any installation of new or replacement windows or doors must be completed in compliance with Building Regulations in the UK.
Completed works can be signed off by your contractor when working with self-certification bodies for the double-glazing industry, such as FENSA or Assure Certification.
But what are the key differences between them, and is it important? Let’s discover more about them in this article so you can make an informed choice.
What is FENSA?
FENSA provides installers with a certificate to ensure that the installer who fitted your windows or doors has complied with Building Regulations. It also means that your installation will have been registered with the Local Council. These are legal requirements, and proof of them is essential when selling your home.
What is an Assure Certification?
Assure is an official, UKAS-accredited Competent Persons Scheme authorised by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government for replacing windows, roof windows, roof lights and doors in England and Wales.
So, what are the key differences between FENSA and Assure?
FENSA is an older organisation than Assure and has a larger membership, so you are more likely to encounter double glazing companies using them for their certification.
However, Assure is rapidly growing in its membership base and is increasingly sought by home and property owners.
FENSA and Assure have accredited double-glazing firms that provide necessary reassurances for their work.
Home improvement companies with either the FENSA or Assure Certification ensure that by working with a registered installer, they will benefit from not only deposit protection but also crucial insurance policies in addition to any guarantees the company provides. Assure, and FENSA have exacting standards for training and competence that their members must meet. If anything goes wrong, organisations like these can step in and provide mediation for any disputes that may arise.
If you use a FENSA contractor, you must always ask them to provide a FENSA certificate for their completed work. Most installers fully know this and will give it to you without asking.
